"My pitching coach told me before the game just to bear down and focus. He said no one was going to hit me if I'm throwing a good breaking ball with good location."
And that's what Joe Blanton did as he led the Athletics to a 1-0 shutout victory over the Dodgers.
"I thought he put the ball where he wanted to," the Los Angeles (N) manager said. "And that's just about the whole secret to pitching."
Blanton yielded 5 hits and had 3 strikeouts and 1 walk in a standout performance.
Blanton has gone 6-6 this season with an ERA of 4.21 and 52 strikeouts in 102.2 innings pitched. Other clubs are hitting .285 against him.

"I wasn't trying to hit a homer. I just wanted to make contact."
That's what Richie Sexson told reporters after he made baseball history today at Safeco Field. The prolific slugger belted home run #300 in the Seattle Mariners 7-3 victory over the Oakland Athletics.
The standout first baseman collected 2 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored.
"I guess this puts me in baseball's elite," said Sexson. "I don't feel any different. I probably should, but I don't. Still, it is a nice achievement. I did get a little excited, didn't I?"
Lifetime Sexson is hitting .261 and has totaled 300 home runs.

 | Sunday, April 27th, 2008: 2000-th Hit for Guerrero!
The day belonged to Vladimir Guerrero of the Anaheim Angels as he became the latest player to reach the 2000-hit plateau. He did it in Anaheim's 7-5 win over Oakland.
"It's a moment I'll never forget," said Guerrero after the game, "2000 hits is a lot. It puts you in a very select group. I never expected to be around long enough to reach a milestone like this."
He finished the day with 2 hits in 5 at-bats.
Guerrero is hitting .325 lifetime with 2000 hits, 375 doubles, 42 triples, 369 home runs and 1189 RBIs to date. He has scored 1057 runs and stolen 170 bases.
